JOB SEARCHING IN JANUARY: THREE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW

Posted on 21 December 2022

In a recent blog, we looked at whether January is a good time to get hired. So, now that we answered that question (if you don’t know, head on over to the blog now), below are some job-searching tips to help you land that dream role in 2023!

Three tips for job searching in January

January brings with it an influx of career opportunities. But with so many people hoping for that new beginning, the competition is high. Hence, it’s more important than ever to have a plan. To help you get started and stand out, here are some tips.

1.  Flawless execution from day one

Let’s start with one of the basic first steps – the resume. Ensure it is error-free and clearly presents skills, knowledge, and experience that qualify you for the job you are applying for. A great way to do this is by

-          carefully reading the job description,

-          educating yourself on the company and

-          tailoring your resume accordingly.

It doesn’t stop here. You need to follow through with flawless execution when writing the cover letter and the email to the hiring manager when applying for the role. Ensure you keep them

-          short,

-          simple,

-          to the point, and

-          relatable.

2.  Have a targeted approach

Often when we find ourselves back in the job-seeking boat, we instinctively apply to every option in the hope that a recruiter will take notice and pull us to solid ground and out of the ocean. But, this can lead to unhappy careers and have a negative domino effect on both you and the organisation.

Therefore, take the time to carefully consider what you want from your career and employer going forward. Take some time to research organisations that fit your vision and create a list of those you wish to target. This way, you’ll benefit from higher, more accurate results rather than getting lost in the crowd of candidates.

3.  Networking is the new trend

As they say, it’s not always what you know but whom you know. Via networking, you can get referrals and onto the radar of hiring managers. So, if you are on the hunt for a new job, reach out to someone you may know that works in the company that piques your interest or know someone that does. Unsure of how to go about this? LinkedIn is a great place to start!

Ensure you are strategic in your approach and don’t become pushy or ask too many people all at once! The last thing you want is a negative impression and a poor word-of-mouth rating.
