5 tips to landing your first job in MedTech

Posted on 11 July 2022

Trying to get your foot into the career door for the first time can be both nerve-wracking and challenging. This applies if you are a newly qualified graduate or transitioning from a different industry. To help you along, we’ve put together five tips to help you land your first job in MedTech, no matter which direction you come from. So, without further ado, let’s jump right in.

5 tips to help you land your first job in MedTech

1.     Plan your career path
Congratulations if you already have all your qualifications and training in place! But, if you’ve only just decided to take the leap, firstly, you’ll need to ask yourself if a career in MedTech is right for you? Once you can answer that question, you’ll need to get your qualifications and training in order. The Medical Technology Association of Australia is a great place to get started. 2.     Stay up to date with the industry
If you’re considering a career in MedTech, it will help to keep your knowledge up to date. This is one industry that is rapidly growing. According to Fortune Business Insights, the global medical devices market “is projected to grow from USD 495.46 billion in 2022 to USD 718.92 billion by 2029.”

Thus, it’s essential to know what skills are in demand and what areas of the medical device industry are growing. This will help you keep your skills and qualifications up to date and ensure you have what it takes to get your foot in the door.

3.     Build the perfect resume
Having a file full of degrees alone will not get you the job. You will need sufficient industry experience to complement your qualifications and training. To gain a competitive advantage, shadow a medical devices rep or take on some unpaid work experience.

4.     Be flexible to gain work experience
The goal here is to get your foot on the career ladder. Hence, flexibility is critical in the early days.

With so many MedTech jobs available and an even bigger talent pool of candidates ready to snap them up, you may wish to
- sacrifice on salary expectations
- consider taking up a role with a smaller company
- relocating

5.     Build connections through networking
You may have seen this mentioned in many of our previous blogs, and there’s a good reason for it. Networking is a powerful tool. Use it to
- connect with leaders within the industry.

- pick their brains for advice.

LinkedIn and networking events, such as AusMedtech (Australia’s MedTech Conference) or MTPConnect’s MedTech Conference are great places to start.
